UncertainFM is an independent, listener-supported, freeform radio station based in Massachusetts. Launched by TJ Connelly at the start of the COVID lockdown in March 2020, UFM focuses on human curation and individual expertise over board-room algorithms and amateur playlisting. Programming covers a wide spectrum of music, with more than 20 weekly and bi-weekly freeform and specialty shows anchored by Connelly’s original “Uncertain Times” weekday program and the weekend kickoff, “Big Stupid Dance Party Friday”.
In this time of crises and isolation, UFM gives listeners a way to stay connected, centered on the shared experience of music and a live human voice. The station is fueled by its multi-channel online community, where listeners and DJs engage throughout the broadcast day, comment on the music of the moment, and discuss a wide range of topics including current events, self-care, and sandwiches.
Specialty shows are informed by the concept of “mixtape radio”. Each DJ hosts a set based on their own tastes and expertise with the intimate feel of a personalized gift. From jazz to goth, Americana to metal, and alternative to electro, UFM is unpredictable and eclectic, filled with new discoveries, forgotten classics, and rare weird stuff in a Technicolor collage that stands out in an otherwise grayscale radio landscape.
